The 2005 Château Batailley is a classic Pauillac, known for its depth and aging potential. A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, it displays vibrant red berry fruit and a mineral character with hints of rose petal. While it has some oak to integrate, its precision, well-structured tannins, and graphite-infused finish make it a standout from the estate’s upward trajectory. Best enjoyed after several more years of aging.

Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 2005 Batailley continues to be an excellent Pauillac that I suspect is overshadowed by some of its more illustrious and, let’s not forget, more expensive neighbors. Here, it has an effervescent bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit and superb mineralité. This is extremely well focused, with hints of rose petal emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finer tannin than in previous years. I feel there is still some oak to be fully absorbed, so don’t be afraid to cellar this 2005 for another four or five years; but, even at this early stage, you can appreciate its precision on the graphite-infused finish. The 2005 Batailley is where the estate began its upward swing that is continuing to this day. Tasted April 2016.

Very muscular and powerful with lots of tannins now, but it will come around. Full body and dense. Leave this alone for three or four years.

Generous and ripely fruity on the nose. Dusty and slightly dry on the end. I could do with just a little more zesty fruit on the palate. But it’s solid.

Pauillac wines have a deep colour.

These wines are potent and robust, particularly during blending, where the power of sauvignon prevails.

The tannin structure resulting from this process gives these wines incredible ageing capacity.

By adding merlot to the blend, Pauillac wines are well-rounded and fruity. After ageing, these wins become highly complex.

Our first wine, designated AOC Pauillac, and categorised as Cinquième Grand Cru Classé since 1855, is a typical Pauillac wine.

This dark ruby wine smells sophisticated, rich and intense when opened, with a powerful nose of black- and red-fruit aromas. In the mouth, its robust, balanced flavour shines through, with pronounced notes of blackcurrant and spices and a long, captivating finish.

Considered an excellent wine of guard, it ages extremely well and can be kept for many years before use.

2005 TASTING
With its dark ruby colour, the wine has a very rich nose with notes of very ripe black fruits. A very straightforward attack in mouth. When tasting, the body develops wonderful, round and well-built. In the end, the wine finishes very long with ripe tannins. A rare, authentic and elegant wine.
